I believe I have read somewhere that due to the conditions and equipment with which they were minted, liberty seated Carson City coins are graded differently than the Philadelphia issues. Is this correct? One good example would be this 1872 CC quarter being offered by a Capped Bust and Liberty Seated specialist. It is graded PCGS F15. This seems somewhat optimistic. From my experience, I would grade it VG10 at best. For comparison, I am attaching pictures of my 1872 CC, which I bought over 20 years ago as VG10. I grade both specimens similarly. Is this grade-flation, or have the grading standards for CC coinage specifically changed over the years?
Which is which Eduard ? The coins are pretty much the same grade IMO, but the one is just a tad bit nicer than the other. Not enough to change the grade though.
Doug, the top one is the one from the dealers website graded PCGS F15. The bottom one is mine. But more than a comparison between the two, what I am asking is whether CC liberty seated coinage is graded differently (i.e more liberally) than Philadelphia, or even S an O mint coins?
Unless it's a crazy-rare coin, I think you will find the standards the same across different mints for the seated material. For some very rare coins, it is my impression that PCGS and NGC are a touch looser -- but that could be an incorrect impression as I've never submitted one to either company. Take care...Mike p.s. I think your coin is a solid F (15ish) -- and quite cool too!
Eduard I have never heard that CC's are graded differently than other mints. That saidd, I do think that the second one is a F-12, but cleaned. Yours does look more attractive, but a VG-10. added: His Liberty does look a tad stronger, also, I can see his Y, is yours there?
That's what I figured. No they are not. But there are those grade the CC's more loosely/leniently because they are CC's. I'd grade both coins VG 10. But your's is definitely the nicer of the two. Better eye appeal, tiny bit more detail, better surfaces. All around it's just the better coin of the two.
