And by early I mean the 1930's and '40's. I specifically wondering about what the grading guidelines would be. I would imagine they are different than moden proof coins. How do slight scratches affect grade etc? Any information would be great, links to anything I could read would also help. Thanks in advance!
Proof coinage is generally graded by the presence, severity and placement of hairlines. This is true for coins minted in the 1800s and is true for coins minted today. Nicks, scratches, cuts and hits are more scarce on proof coins and they can really hammer the grade. Additionally, haze or toning play a factor in eye appeal and this can affect the grade, too.
It's a whole new ballgame. I think early Washington proofs are the most difficult and subjectively graded coins in the series.
Thanks Jesse, that's good to know. I did pick one up off of eBay today, so i'm looking forward to seeing it in hand and posting quality pictures to get everyone's opinion.
