Grading Coins in Mint BU sets

I am new to collecting coins. Mint BU sets in the original packaging from the 1950's and 1960's are still being sold today. If they were graded, what grade would they go for?

Hello, and welcome to the forum. While the question you asked is almost impossible to answer, I will give you an example and hope it helps:

I bought and submitted 50 1958 proof sets to NGC. All coins were taken straight from the original government packaging. Here are the results:

50c: 33 PF67, 2 PF68, 2 PF69, 3 did not meet the minimum acceptable grade of PF66CAM.

25c: 23 PF67, 1 PF68, 26 did not meet the minimum acceptable grade of PF66CAM.

10c: 23 PF67, 9 PF68, 8 PF69, 10 did not meet the minimum.

5c: 34 PF67, 13 PF68, 2 PF69, 1 did not meet the minimum.

1c: 11 PF67RD, 39 did not meet the minimum.

So, as you see, results can vary widely for coins of the same type and the same year, as well as coins in the same package. You might notice that not a single coin received a Cameo or Deep Cameo designation. This will hold true for Mint BU sets; results will vary - even to a much wider scale. I have pulled clad Kennedy Halves from Mint sets that look like they have been dragged along a parking lot for a month before being sealed in the set. I'm not joking.

This point needs to be emphasized. Grades can and do vary from coin to coin, so if the OP is thinking that mint set + submission = profit, don't; the coins are individuals and must be judged as you would any others. Basically, don't automatically assume that if you buy what you believe to be an original mint set, you're going to walk away with all superb gems.


Also, don't assume that original or original-looking packaging automatically means that all the coins are original too.

That is what I was thinking also. Seems a bit high numbers and NO CAMS at all? That is even more strange. The pennies I can see. I do not find many in my sets that stand out. BTW, 60's sets are what I search..

 

Anybody do a set of 1961's or 1962's? I have a few of those. Also, what's the net cost for a group like that?
