Okay members, here is your chance to grade with the pros.

    4.
    5.

I know that it is difficult to grade by photo's, but give it a try.

It is indeed tough to grade from these pics. Some of the coins appear proof so I'll just use numerical grades since I'm not sure if any are proof or not.

    1. 30
    2. 55
    3. 62 (Franklins are particularly tough)
    4. 64
    5. 63

It occurs to me that if I've severly undergraded these there could be a stampede to buy my inventory, and likewise if I've overgraded I may be deafened by the sound of crickets chirping in the shop tomorrow lol.

I'm not going to post my answers here - but I will send them along to Nd in a P/M just for fun :D

And folks - don't be afraid to say what ya think. Even more importantly - say WHY you are giving the grade you do. And don't worry about being right or wrong. For as my daddy used to tell me - "if a man doesn't make a mistake now and then - it's because he's not doing anything". This is how we all learn. ;)

that 62 Frankie sure looks like a proof coin to me...

The 51 suffers from some strike weakness, however it still appears to be gem quality... ms65

I was late to your challenge, but thought I would add my comments...

    1. Too hard to tell from the photo.
    2. I would have to see the coin, but based on the photo I would not assign this coin a grade of XF45, based on the obverse photo I would call it an XF40 - not a huge difference, but a difference nonetheless.
    3. Could not tell from the photo if the coin was proof or BU.
    4. Based on the obverse, I would guessed MS64.
    5. Would have guessed MS64, but difficult to tell on the cheek.

I like your idea of a grading challenge!

I thought the Walker was VF-20. I know early year Walkers are graded differently (i.e. skirt lines are weak), but it appeared the breast plate was barely defined, which did not seem to be XF. However, you mentioned the photo was bad so perhaps it looks better in person.

Well 64 is what I would expect for this coin. The marks on the cheek, neck and in the fields in front of her head all indicate a 64. When grading the obverse of a coin, the image should be contact mark free or limited. The fields in front of the image should also have limited marks. Behind the image is more acceptable as the eyes are naturally drawn towards the view of the image. If that makes sense.

In defense of this particular coin, it is a 1898-S Morgan. Most are very weakly struck.

boy she is so well defined. the coin looks proof like from the pic. i wouldnt think that the bag marks would nock her down that far?

    1. G-4. I debated between G-4 and VG-8 but since I think I am probably more of a conservative grader, I will grade it a G-4.

    2. VF-20.. I would grade this one higher than a VF-20 but it appears it has little luster remaining.

    3. AU-55. I might be overgrading this one. I am being conservative again because I can't see all of the surface marks in detail.

    4. AU-50. I think this one has a little less luster and perhaps has more surface marks than the previous Franklin.

    5. MS-62. I think this Morgan certainly grades between a MS-60 and MS-63.

pog look at the big dig under the S in Pluribus. And the cheek has what appear to be multiple contact marks. The cheek is a very grade sensitive area. I was actually at 63 on this one because I couldn't tell from the pics the extent of the cheek marks.
Just wanted to state what I was seeing, there.
