    Hello all,

I am new to this game so would appreciate your opinions on the grading of this coin: a 1852-O Liberty Head $10.

I've taken some pics and scans below. I realize they're not the best.

I'm fairly certain all the marks are on the coin, not the holder. Initially, I will not disclose the grading company nor the grade, as this may bias your opinions.

    Any advice appreciated.

I debated AU but I don’t think there is any wear, so I’m going with MS 62.

Might be in a MS holder but to me it looks dipped out and 58ish.

I agree with @Mannie gray - it looks to have been dipped, though that may just because of the way it appears in the photos. Still a nice and desirable coin, regardless.

When do we get to see the grade? ;)

    PS- welcome to CoinTalk!

I already know what the grade is but I'm at details as well due to the obverse and reverse scratch.

Fields look almost polished like a proof - probably from cleaning! Going with AU details.

Slab looks like an edge-view NGC holder ;-)

Grade? It’s could be any grade from AU/UNC details to MS62. I see a scratch which appears to be in the coin and light cleaning.

MS in my opinion. Not very good at detecting dipped on gold, so with hold an opinion on that point. Just a guess but looks like the TPG is NGC?

Art, Welcome to CT . I don't know if the coin I'm posting below will confuse the GTG, or if is relevant, but I sold the coin earlier this year. It graded AU55, & had a "green bean" sticker. 1852 $20 obverse.jpg 1852 $20 reverse.jpg

It has been dipped, and I would give it an AU-55 based on my "old time grading." I imagine that it's in an AU-58 or MS-61 or 62 holder.

And the prongs tell us it's in an NGC holder.

Here's my type coin for the "No Motto" $10 gold. I bought this one in 1996. This is what an AU-58 used to and should look like. You won't find one like this in an AU-58 holder these days. They have most all be cracked out for an up grade.

Here is another example of how "grade-flation" has worked. This 1861 double eagle is in an AU-58 holder. I bought this coin raw many years ago and had it graded about 20 years ago.

Nice coin. Details grading can really hurt the value of your coin. I have a 1904 Liberty that was my first gold coin purchase. I bought it from a dealer and he took it with him to a show and had it graded. It came back UNC Details - Obverse Scratched. I thought it was real nice and didn't see the scratches. The dealer offered to reimburse me, but I decided to hold onto it. That was in 2009. It still looks good to me.

@artm I think it’s about time to reveal the assigned grade… if not this thread will get even more derailed.
