I posted this in another thread, but no reply. So hope this gets some feedback. Anyone that can assist appreciated. I have just purchased this last night but not delivered yet.

I would say it's in the neighborhood of XF. Don't quote me on this since I haven't tried to grade many gold coins. I'm not sure what's going on with the obverse rims though. They look scratched in places.

I will not be able to look at this coin in detail for some time. I wonder if it is counterfeit with that obverse rim detail?

Possibly cleaned, based on the obverse looking dirty around the stars and cleaner on the inside.

I really need to stop buying raw coins!

XF at best. Obverse definitely looks cleaned. Not digging the rims, either. Possible ex-jewelry.

If you paid $300 you should be ok.

$345, I do have another one that is graded MS62. This will just be my 2nd favorite 1881 $5 Liberty Head.

I purchased 3 other dubious raw gold coins in one of those government auctions last week. Big mistake. I will never buy a raw coin again unless I can see it up close.

Don't be too sad! There's 0.24187 oz of gold in that coin, so if you sit on it till gold reaches around $1425/oz (which is very possible) you'll break even just from the gold in the coin. With gold at $1173/oz right now, it's worth around $283 even if you smashed it with a hammer.

    That's what I was thinking.
