I while back I purchased this coin. It's a Morgan 1883 "O". I was wondering if it was worth slabing. Before you ask, No, I do not intend to sell it but in my opinoin if a coin has value then it should be slabbed, in case I should pass in an acident or something. This way my family would realize that there was something special about the coin and have it appraised before selling it. The problem with this coin is how I came across it. Due to those circumstances I think it may have been cleaned. If so I really can not find evidence of the process, except for the streaks that can be faintly seen on the reverse. Can some one help me by guessing at the grade. I realize pictures do it no justice and grade a photo is almost imposible but I can't run out to a local dealer and have them help.
The rule I go by and many other too is--if a coin is worth over $100 or is a key date then slab it...I also slad some coins such as...RED IHC...Proof CAMEO Franklins... As for the grade...MS61/2. Also the reason I slab some of the other coins (IHC...PF Franklins) is because I like to keep my IHC RED if I can...and I'm doing a set of Proof Franklins... So its up to you total but is it worth the $15-$25 to have this coin slabbed...and if its been cleaned all you will get is a body bag. Speedy
Well wait till the experts tell you but I would say yes...the hair lines on the back and a few above the head and behind the head leads me to think that it has been cleaned.... please pardon my posts today...I have a head cold and its driving me nuts.... Speedy
Based on the pic it appears the coin has been dipped - but that could be because of the pic itself. If the coin has full luster when seen in hand I would say it is MS63. If it has little or no luster - then it woul dbe returned in a body bag. I'd have to see it in person to be sure but I don't think the streaks in the pic are the result of anything but the dip. Either way - I wouldn't pay to have the coin slabbed. Even in MS64 you can buy that coin for $40 - $60.
Thanks GDJMSP. I'm pretty sure it's been dipped. It's not pitted but the back is streaked. The reason I ask is this is the very first Morgan dollar I ever owned. I got it from a unsearched hoard on E-bay before I knew better. Slabbed or not I really like this coin, maybe more for sentiment than anything else, so I wouldn't sell it. Just wanted to know a little more about what I have.
