Hi All, Here are 5 recent acquisitions. Any advice on Grades would be much appreciated. Sorry no pics available of the Reverses but they are in better shape than the obverse. Any thoughts on the 1926 with 'counter stamp' marks?
Your images don't seem to be getting larger for me, which makes it difficult to really examine the pieces. Overall, they look funky enough to have me concerned.
Sorry for the non-expandable images. I'm a bit of a newbie. How do I post expandable images? Note, this NGC grading page. I'm curious of the iridescent blue toning, the stamp marks on the 1826 coin, as well as the grade estimates. http://www.ngccoin.com/coin-grading-guide/Grading-Braided-Hair-Half-Cents.aspx
They've been cleaned at some point and they gradually re-toned. That might account for the "funky" blue. But you find that with a LOT of 19th-century pieces. I still think it's a handsome set.
Thanks John A. I paid $24 each for them. If they are legit (still need to weigh them), I think I did okay. The 1817 is the best of the lot. The 1826 with 'chop marks' intrigues me. I know the Chinese used chop marks on Trade Dollars back in the day, but I doubt they used them on little old cents. The ones on this 1826, are not just random gouges, but patterns. Kind of neat I think.
I don't know the history of this series - how often or even IF they were ever counterfeited. My guess is that they're authentic, but they've survived some pretty serious manhandling.
You need to post both the obverse and reverse - hopefully larger pictures. These coins remind me of another posted recently that was a fake. You can use something like photobucket to up load large pictures too and then include the links into your post.
