I have three questions about my Trade Dollar.

    1. How would you grade it? (my opinion is XF45)

    2. Do you think it's been cleaned? (my opinion is yes)

    3. Is it worth sending it out to PCGS for grading?

    Thanks !

Hard to tell. It appears to have good luster so there a fair chance that it's not cleaned. I agree with you on the grade it's around XF 45. On a good day it might grade AU 50. Heres a few things to take into consideration. First if you payed over $100. I would not suggest getting it grade unless you live buy PCGS in caifornia. Or have a bunch of other coins that you want to get graded.

I might go AU 50 on the grade, but it really should get certified. Any who know me are probably shocked, but these are so faked nowadays you should get it slabbed to know both if yours is real, and to maximize its value if you wish to sell. Btw, I am guessing old cleaning but not sure if the TPG would body bag it. The fields, for the grade, are too lifeless, at least in the pic.

XF40, maybe XF45 if it still has luster.
Can't tell if cleaned or not. My first impression was maybe yes.
Also can't tell if it is counterfeit. The Chinese have become quite adept at counterfeiting seemingly circulated trade dollars, so it's best to get it certified.

PCGS will put it into a genuine holder, so the exact details grade is irrelevant.

I think it should be sent to NGC for a details grade.

My expecation is NGC AU Details, Cleaned.

I am not questioning your opinion here but just trying to learn how to spot cleaning on older coins. (or coins that were cleaned a long time ago and tougher to spot) Can you point out to me what makes you think this was cleaned?

The coin looks like a cleaned XF45 to me. I think it has been cleaned because the surfaces and luster do not look natural.

The one danger in all of this OP is if your picture is not indicative of the coin. Pics can lie, and if your coin is not really that color and has more luster than the pic shows, then its possible we are wrong. What we are seeing is a weird obverse color, and lack of luster especially in protected areas where, if original, should be present. By the luster not being present, it looks like an overdipped coin that has been impaired.

I hope that helps you interpret our comments.

pumpkinpie what is this I don*t even

XF-40. I don't think it could get too much higher because it has no mint luster.

IMO its xf45 cleaned. Hard to tell from the pics but I'm not seeing the luster like you all are from the cleaning.
