    98- XF 40

    thank you.

haha, i was informed that they were all ms grades, by the 'consultation of a dealer.' even still, i played it smart and only offered 100 for them.

Consultation of the same dealer that sold them to you, lol?

Though that 1886 looks really nice. Probably the only MS one of the bunch though. Probably MS 63 or 64.

The 1896 looks good too... I can see some wear, but just barely, honestly I'd give it an AU 58.

    1897 and 1898 I'd call EF-45.

Not seeing hardly any wear on the 1885, I'd go AU 58 on that.

Not sure why others as so hard on the 1898-O... I think it looks better than that... I'd say EF-45, maybe even AU-50, not sure what others are seeing that I'm not.

    I'd go AU 55 on the 1921.

Maybe I'm overgrading a tad but I just don't think this look as worn as some of the other grades here show... if any can tell me why they should grade lower appreciate the education. However grading is a matter of opinion and I tend to be a tad more generous if the overall coin looks pretty good.

Anyway even if they're lower than my grades I'd say $100 was a reasonable offer. If they are my grades it would be a decent bargain.

I have been lulled into the MS trap as well Screwtape, so don't worry about that. This is the best place to come to and then educate yourself. I feel much better about my Morgan grading by coming here and also reading books (Photograde and Counterfiet Detection by PCGS are both really good).

As far as the 98-O, the only reason I went with the 30 is because of the top of the hairline. This coin has a slightly unusual wear pattern, IMO. The details at the top of the hair are a little more worn than you normally see for an AU I think. Also, the leg feathers on the reverse are a little more worn than you would normally expect for an AU. The 98-O isn't known for a poor (or a great) strike, so that factors into the decision a little as well.

By the way, do what I do. Once a dealer passes something off to you as an MS coin, and it clearly isn't, don't go back. Learn from it (like you are doing here), enjoy the coins you have (which may not be MS, but are still very nice), and find a better dealer to buy from. They do exist -- many of them are on this board.

    Good luck!

ha, wasnt from a dealer. it was from what i like to call a TPLENOG (third party little experience non official grader.) anyway, i figure at the cost of a c-note and in the worst case scenario, i got equal what i paid for.
