I would grade it an AU50. has about three quarters of it's mint luster left some wear on the hair and cheek area reverse some wear on the bell area. Nice coin

I can't see any wear on it, especially on the hair. The hair has great detail.

Dude...why do you ask people to grade stuff if you're going to argue about it?

Just send everything to SGS and they'll give you the MS-67 grades you're looking for.

Yeah that is over the top. I'm interested is what people think and have a dialog. Now if I didn't ask follow up questions them I'd agree with you that I should send the SGS, whoever that is, and get their grade.

BTW, - FWIW my name is Ruben and Dude, and it IS a pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Well you really should zoom in on the coin . I don't know what grading system you use but there is wear on the hair.there is no doubt in my mind it's a AU50.

what area on the hair. Those likes are pretty large blowups. If you show me how to see the wear it would go a long way to being able to grade these coins, and they are tough to grade.

I think the problem is the color of the coin in the picture. From the picture it looks like most of the luster you would see on the Franklin is not there. These are hard to grade to start with. Now with that aside the top of the bell on the reverse is either very weak or has wear - can't really tell from the pictures. So to play it safe I would say from AU to maybe MS63. And if I had to pin it down based off the pictures I would say MS62 - just because of the little contact marks I see and because the surfaces seem to be consistent. I am by no means an expert at grading these and am basing this off what I think I see in the pictures. Of course Ruben if you want to sent it to me for the "in-hand grading" please ship it on over here. :)

    Ruben,

If you are looking for some informative data about coin grades you may want to get a copy of the ANA Grading Standards book "The Official American Numismatic Association Grading Standards for United States Coins" by Kenneth Bressett as well as the Photograde Book (for circulated coins) by James F. Ruddy. These will identify the high point of these coins and what wear points to review IE. Where the wear points are on Franklin Halves and why you see some traces of wear on hairlines in AU graded Franklins.
IMHO coin photos are only good to establish a rough grade. Better explanation from photos are pointless as a photo cannot display the true luster or lack of wear unless it is sever. Over magnification (>10) only show details that exaggerate a coin's flaws not seen by the human eye(All coins have flaws). Magnification of more than 10x should be reserved for Varieties. Personally I think 7.5x is sufficient when reviewing common coins.

    Good luck,
    Tom

yeah - I've been looking this. I'm not convinced that isn't just weakness in a coin that is legendary for such weakness (scrunch nose)

Yes Ruben - that was the area I zeroed in on when I looked at the reverse.

Well - I think so. I am still not familiar enough with the series to really know what to look for, but I think the picture shows enough luster to get it a low MS grade. Just my opinion.

I find it almost impossible to distriguish with these coins, even with a grading guide.

    What is Blooming Luster?
