Just received this Washington quarter and thought I'd throw it up for a grade guessing thread. It is a circulation strike 1977P. What is the grade?

Just a shot in the dark, because Washington Quarters are not my area, but I see no reason that shoudn't be a 67.

    Obverse - MS65

    Reverse - MS66

PCGS probably called it MS65 due to the chatter on Washington's cheek, but I could see it with a "plus" grade... :)

if the nicks are on the rim and scratches in field then should not go past 64 in my opinion otherwise very nice.

That's an awesome very early struck quarter. Philly was putting out garbage at the time. It's tough to find these earlier clads like this. I think they graded it 66 but feel like I'm having to guess + or - a grade point based on the pics. Hold on to that one.

I will post the grade in a little bit. It is a PCGS graded coin and I think it is a pretty good looker myself.

Two more pictures, if it may change your view up or down. I know it is not like having it in front of your face and thanks for the participation.

MS64. The hits on the face are too obvious. Plus that lock of hair above and to the right of the ear looks like a poor strike with inadequate metal flow.

Hmm, that actually seems vey low for such a well struck later 20th century quarter.

I keep looking at it. The fields are clear and frosty, Washington and the devices are nearly mark free. I would think it would have graded at least MS65. I purchased it off ebay for about $7 as a reference coin of what a MS63 quarter should look like.

19Lyds described what's probably the issue. I mistook for the plastic, but the obverse's high points must be sporadically riddled with leftover planchet marks. These clads are as tough to photo as proofs sometimes.

Do these pics confirm the diagnosis?

There's also quite a ding on the bottom right of his hair.

The lower right hair ding does show better in the later pics. I had to use a loupe to see the ding. There are also a few other minor scratches in that area of the hair and one other bag mark just SW of the ding. Other than that, it is a clean coin. Is that ding, bag mark, and minor scratches in that area of the hair enough to take it to 63?

Also, check out the 1976 I posted for grading.
