I seriously disagree with this grade so I want to see if I'm losing my mind or not. How would you grade this

MS-63. That toning looks like it must be lovely in hand.

I can confirm, you are losing your mind -- 65PL. :)

Just think, Ruben, how valuable it would when making a decision like this if you had the opinion of a third party whose grading eye you trusted. :hail:

    Is that your real grade?

I'll guess 64. The reverse looks PL.

If it were me I'd grade it a 64, but a high end 64. Personally I don't see it being PL but that is hard to judge by pics alone as not all pics show that quality.

MS 64, with a PL reverse, but since there is no designation for that just plain ole MS 64. Nice coin, with attractive toning! THe reverse looks PL to me, but not the obverse--that would not meet current reflectivity standards IMHO.

Agreed. It is the most high level of 64, verging on 65. I would NOT be shocked to see it in a 65 slab at all. Perhaps a star designation?

    OFFICIAL NGC GRADE: MS 64*

I was trying to predict what NGC graded the coin. My "real grade" is immaterial to this discussion as we all have our own standards...Mike

p.s. I could see NGC not giving it the PL label as they tend to shy away from toned coins when judging PL vs non-PL.

    Nice coin! :thumb:

EDIT: Just for the record, this is the grade I believe NGC has assigned.

I would have gone MS63, those hits on her face are pretty distracting, not even close to a 65...

That is why I gave it a 64, instead of a 65. The fields are very clean and free of marks.

The caboose is nearly perfect... That and the strike is my interest in the coin.

OK - so according to NCG graded this as a MS65 PL. I look at the bag marks on the face and think that it is a MS63 on the Obverse and MS66+ on the reverse. It should grade according to the weakest side, so I look at it as a very premium 63 PL. There are a few1898 MS PLs on Heritages archives. Non-PLs are crusing in at about $180.00

    PL's are much wider

    Auction 1110, Lot 6483 Sunday, June 29, 2008 65 NGC $264.50
    Auction 451, Lot 7886 Monday, April 16, 2007 65 NGC $299.00
    Auction 1172, Lot 9612 Sunday, July 15, 2012 65 PCGS $747.50
    Auction 1145, Lot 10834 Sunday, October 31, 2010 65 PCGS $402.50
    Auction 1118, Lot 8858 Saturday, December 6, 2008 65 PCGS $373.75

This coin is selling for $450

Is it a decent price or not? Deal or no deal?

65 PL? That's crazy. I guess they gave a couple of points for eye appeal.

It looks like the NGC examples trade lower then that.... I'd say that's a little high for a NGC graded coin... It is nice however.
