Ok, I'm considering this item and want to get some opinions before I jump in... Can I get your opionions on grade? 1954 Jefferson. I know the pictures are poor but its all I have to go on at the time The spots are on the holder, not the coin, the only real trouble spot I see is the scratch on the reverse through the center. Your expertise or opinions as to the grade would be greatly appreciated.

I would call it an ms-65. It looks pretty free from marks, but it has some striking weakness (typical of a lot of jeffersons). I wouldn't be surprised to see it in a 66 holder though.

What do you base that on? I'm just curious. Grading is subjective and very much opinion oriented but I am curious what determined the grade as AU55 for you... Not saying you're wrong, not saying your right... Just wondering how others arrive at the grades they state!

Thanks for the quick reply Spock! (BTW yes, you are in the running for silver but its not over yet by any means! :)

I have a very big dislike for scratches. Thats why i used the term net. Now i know most people say that scratches dont lower the grade that drastically. But if i put myself in the buyer shoes and buy this and send it off to pcgs for grading then in my mind i would have to be happy with the result so as to know that i wasnt ripped off. But as you said its very subjective and I have lost out on quite a few deals int he past with my approach so if the experts are saying its ms 65 then i would go with that .

I look at over all beauty of the coin. the wear on high points, scratches bag marks, luster etc. Its better to be wrong and grade conservatively when one is buying IMHO then it is when selling just protects my bottom line as more often than not I have a small budget and can let many coins go by till i get something I really like. HOpe this explains where I am coming from :)

Very much so! Thank you. I have to agree, I dislike scratches myself and they often keep a coin from achieving anything higher than MS65, combine that with the weak strike and its not a real attractive coin.. The attraction to it comes in the form of an OMM S/D.....

Well to let the cat out of the bag this coin has been graded MS65. It is in an old ANACS slab. I was hoping for a crackout and a potential upgrade but with the weak strike and that nasty scratch I don't think it has much hope. It is a 1954 S/D variety with substantial price differences between the grades so I was hopig to get lucky... I still may pick it up, but I will do so expecting it to say in its current holder. Thanks guys!
