Hey everybody :hail:- been away for a bit ... nice to be back- I would like some opinions on what you think the grade of this Morgan is or what it would possibly grade as at PCGS. Any imput would be appreciated. Thanks-
I believe that sometimes grades are swayed due to the date. Certain mints & dates just had better strikes. I just wanted an opinon that would be totally unbiased. Thanks-
Im going to agree with AZ its MS 63. Possible PL are those pic taken in Black and White? Why is the date and mint mark blocked out? Did you block the date and Mintmak? If not It looks photoshopped.
No, It doesnt have Pl fields (I wish) & the picture was taken in color with a 50W halogen light . Please see the above post on why I blocked the date - I will show the coins date in a bit. Thanks for posting.hya:
Judging on the picture, I agree with MS63. However, my Morgans always look worse in photos than in hand. Who knows ? Might pull a 4. Reverse looks nice.
I'll retract that since the feathers don't look right for an 81-s. I guess its a P-mint, so I'll go 1885 ms-63.
But then how can we give a correct grade? If the mintmark on this coin is an S then it might grade 63 because it had a nice strike, and that is normal, but if it was an O it would grade much higher because they are known for a weak strike and this would be alot better than normal. You can't give a grade without knowing date/mintmark. Speedy
I want to add to this, I dont care what year or mint mark is on a coin. I grade them as I see them. The only thing I take into consideration is if its a weak strike.
OK, and what do you do if the coin does have a weak strike but that date and mint is not known for having a weak strike ? Do you downgrade the coin or do you grade it without taking the weak strike into account ?
I'll trade you a bunch of "S" mint Morgans for equal grade "O" minted ones. Using the Oldman (all coins equal) grading system, of course.
