Common CC date. It's in a GSA holder marked "Silver Dollar" instead of "Uncirculated", so I believe that means the ladies put it in the "B" pile.
It's a VAM 4 with the spike date and die gouge through the designer's initial.

    Opinions on grade?
Do you think the obverse gold toning is a bad thing on a GSA dollar?

There were plenty of those placed in the wrong holder by people deciding what was unc and what wasn't when they didn't really know how to tell the difference. But unless my memory is faulty, and it sometimes is, the circulated coins went into the soft holders not the hard ones - and they didn't all have the Uncirculated on them.

But in this case - I think that is a coin that has seen some circulation. I'd say AU55.

I would have to say AU....as some of the hair shows what looks to be wear...I don't think its a weak strike but I could be wrong.

Thanks guys. I really don't know. I should have tipped it on the scanner or attempted a photo. Don't have the coin at home any more. Maybe I'll retrieve it from the underground vault later in the week.

At first, the coin looked MS to me. The obverse is toned gold and the reverse is blast white with plenty of luster. Many of the high points on the obverse have rubbed and the toning in missing in these places... so the toning happened before it went into the GSA holder. Can't tell if it saw some circulation or excessive contact in a bag. I don't think it's worth sending to NGC to find out.

I agree about the reverse, but where we normally see breaks in the frost on a Morgan from bag marks & coin rub, with this coin we can see metal that has been moved. That's what makes the difference.

And I also agree that the toning likely occurred before it was placed in the GSA holder.

    She's beautiful!!

Here's the story I have heard about the holder.....At the time these were put into the holders, toning was not acceptable to most collectors, they wanted blast white. All the toned coins were put into these holders. She is uncirculated, a bit baggy (but almost all of them are), at least a 63(being a CC she could go 64), a nice VAM, and you did good;):D
