Picked this up last week. The scan doesn't show the luster or cartwheels, but the coin looks very nice in hand. Strong contrast on the obverse. Weak strike. Partial fingerprint near Liberty's chin. Roller marks at center. I'm not sure how these affect the grade. I'm not slabbing it. Just want to hear your opinions on the grade and any knowledge about how roller marks impact grading. It's a VAM 30A with a triple '1', partial clashed 's', and O/O mint mark.
I am not sure - I want to say AU, but in this case I really can't tell weak strike from wear. And it almost looks like it the hair above the ear and the eagle was rolled like you mention, but I do not know how it effects the coin. No matter what it is a interesting coin. Just my opinion of course.
A question for you - why AU? I am wondering about that roll effect. It looks kind of cool, but how does that effect the grade? I personally was not sure about wear, roll effect and the strike(since the O mint marks are usually weakly struck). Just wondering.
Based on the pics I just think there is wear on the coin. Check the hair above the forehead, the nose and the bonnet. On the rev the eagle's breast, the left talon, the olive branch and the right wingtip.
thanks for sharing. i cannot tell luster quality from the photo. the strike is weak even for a new orleans or it has been affected by additional wear on the high spots to make this an au coin. also look for luster breaks and wear on the rim. if, in hand, there is no break in the luster and would be unc., i would only go to 63 simply due to strike. it is still a beautiful coin, and an a very interesting vam. thank you again for sharing.....steve btw: ' i previously had a similar 84. it had a similar strike w/ roller marks visible and w/ prooflike fields. mine was more baggy in the fields tho, than your appear to be. ngc had given it a 62 pl
Makes perfect sense to me. A lot of AU coins can be described as, "if it wasn't for that tiny bit of wear, it would be MSxx."
You're probably right... :desk: In case you're wondering, when I say AU 63, that means I think the coin is an AU coin that a TPG would grade 63 -- a "slider" if you will....Mike
