What would you grade this dime? Its my best Early-Merc. Came in a lot of mercury dimes from the bay sorry about the dust... lol oh, and do notice the slight rim-damage on the reverse (near "E" in DIME) and it is nicely tarnished
Looked at my grading guide I'll have to change it to F-15 . Or whatever number higher thats right below VF . rzage Borderline almost VF
You ask what makes it F instead of VF , I was being very conservative when I said the highest number under VF . Grading isn't absolute it could very well be VF and after what Arizona said it probably is a VF-20 , the ANA grading guide says for VF , wear shows on diagonal lines but most detailes visible , yours are visible but weak , thats what I based my grade on . I forgot that the obverse is the most important side & your obverse is a solid VF-20 . I'll change back to my original VF-20 , when I start to over analize a coin I get in trouble , 1st impressions are usually right . rzage
I agree with your technical analysis of this coin rzage. I find it to have VF details but what I like most about this Mercury is that it appears to have been "not cleaned". Maybe not perfectly preserved, but I love the long term patina that this one is exhibiting. Nice one Magman! Thanks for sharing!! Allen
I am not good at grading but the "S" looks like a die crack or extra tail on it. Can you get a better photo of the "S"
thanks a lot guys, and thanks rzage. I'll try to get a better picture of the S. here we go: I was tying to get a picture of the actual coin too, since the toning is red in color... but its hard.
