Grade My George III Penny

    OK...I was looking this coin up in Krause and was amazed to see that in F,it's worth $6, in VF it's $12 and in XF it's a $50 coin.What is your grade?

    Nice catch!
    I'd say XF, but the Brits will probably say something like a very fine-extremely fine or some such thing.
    I read the auction results in Coin World and the terminology drives me nuts.

    Obverse XF w/damage, Reverse VF IMHO.

    A VF that is more leaning toward EF than it is VF. that is somewhere in the middle or `Good VF as we Brits would say. Definitely NOT EF obverse however. Too much wear to the high points.

    Even with the dusting of verdigris and the nibble on the obverse rim, it should fetch more than $12. ;-)

    Thanks everyone...I think it was less than $20 but to be honest,I can't really remember.In any case,I probably did OK.

    I love GIII coins...what a great protrait they have and that is a very nice example.
