I took a gamble when I purchased this coin. What is its grade and approximate value? Should I get it NGC/PCGS Slabbed?

How could I tell if it has been cleaned? If it has, what does that do to its value?

There are many threads on that subject. Use your search button and have your pick of discussions. Better photos would be a big plus!

Really hard to tell with the pictures - looks AU to me. Plus what is up with the A in States? The pictures also make it looked like it was whizzed or polished - but it could just be the pictures.

Gratz on owning this nice 1863 IHC GeekMan. The cent you have seems to have alot of wear along the upper hairline and I cant see any of the diamonds showing along the ribbon which to me says that the coin has been in circulation. I dont think it has been cleaned so much as just circulated lightly. I say its VF30 without the diamonds. We could tell alot more if you could take a picture without the 2x2 flip as these are tough to judge a coin in (as im doing). Nice indian just the same tho.

Here are some larger pics and, the coin out of the 2x2 :)

    Please let me know, thanks!

P.S. "United States" on the face of the coin is more worn down in comparison with "Of America"

I think the weakness is United States looks more like a weak strike than wear, IMO. Nice coin, I'd wager a guess at a solid AU. Pretty sure it circulated though.

Looks around AU50 to me and worth roughly $50. The second set of photos are great!

Thats awesome! Id like to hear from more people though :) I got the coin for $20.00

I also just noticed that the coin appears to have an off center strike on the planchet as well!

I would say that it is somewhere between XF and AU details - cleaned. I would guess you paid about the going rate for it.

the hair and ribbon on the obverse appear to be lacking some detail, as well as the lower end of the wreath on the reverse. upper vf to lower ef, imo.

I think AU details - not 100% sure of the cleaning, but sure looks like it. Still a pretty nice coin.

Another one of those harshly cleaned IHC's .

At $20 you probably paid the market rate, very interesting coin, significant die clash on obverse, the outline of the wreath is easy to see, and the reverse has (what appears to be) a die crack and what appears to be a shelf below CENT. If that is a raised line a nice research project would be to determine what caused the raised line. No need for certification on the coin. Enjoy the purchase.
