Went and took a little time digging through foreigns at the local coin shop, and here's what I came up with. Mind you, I paid 20 cents each, and only had to pay for 3 of them because I gave him some worthless Australian 2 centers. How did I do? 1889J 5 pfennig 1962 cent from Suriname-AU (personal grade, far from professional) 1923 50 centimes, French Chamber of Commerce 1949 Haitian 10 centimes 1905 Russian 10 kopek 1907 Columbian 5 pesos 1899 Russian 1/2 kopek 1980 Netherlands 25 cent proof! Yes, its a proof found in a grab box. Pictures on the way
Of course you did fine. You havd fun acquiring the coins & I suspect that the Russia 10 kopek is silver.
Yes it was fun, educational, and the thing with me is this: I do not have the income or means to aquire bullion, Morgans, '69s Lincoln cents, or anything professionally graded. To me, a $5 profit on a coin is Great! I am trying to get a feel for this new hobby of mine, and have as little loss as possible. So, when I go trade up a dozen 2 centers for some scattered coins worth a buck a piece, I win in my eyes. Yea, yea, a buck is a buck. But my goal is to arm myself with some deep knowledge of the hobby in its entirety before I start making investments. This is my boyhood treasure hunt encarnate, and I love learning. Just a few moments ago, I learned from a CT member who posted on a thread of mine, that die varieties can be extremely subtle, and to keep a keen eye. Thank you to him. And thank you, collect89, for your reply. Compared to 99.875% of the regulars on here, I deal in "chump change". But to me, as long as Im not losing money, I must be doin something right. And one day, I will be one of the bigger coin guys. Just not now. Thanks to all who advise and help me out.
I've collected expensive, and I've collected cheap, and I've discovered that I get no less numismatic satisfaction collecting cheap than I do expensive.
Sounds like good pickups to me. The Russian coins are the best of the lot in my opinion, assuming the condition is decent. The Colombian 5 pesos is pretty good too. I think that's inflationary coinage. It has a special spot in Krause. I'm like you, I try to get the most bang for my buck, and I can't imagine spending a hundred dollars on a coin. There are still some of us out there and there are plenty of coins for us to enjoy.
I imagine that would be the case, but to be honest, I simply cannot afford to go big right now. So instead of go all in and risk everything on mediocre knowledge and capitalist style coin shops wanting my goodies, I choose to bide my time and learn how to prevail when my experience matches my desire. I don't know if that makes sense, but I tried, lol. You are right though. I am flying completely solo on my collecting. I recently (7 months ago) experienced the loss of my son, so this is a way to help battle that feeling. Lo and behold, it became a very addictive hobby. Glad I chose coins instead of white powdery substances.... Anyway, that's about all I have to say at the moment.
I'm truly sorry for your loss, friend. I have four kids of my own, and I don't know how I'd cope if I lost one of them. Please accept my thoughts and prayers for your healing.
