This coin was included in a grab bag of various 19th and 20th century type coins that I purchased at an auction. What grade would you give this coin. Using the ANA Grading guide, I am at a toss up of either VG or F as the guide mentions that pre-1921 coins can have a little more wear and still make a "Fine" grade. Also for those that are interested, below is a list of the remaining coins in the type set with approximate grade in brackets: Cents: 2 sets of 1982 cents with all 7 varieties (UNC) Nickels: 1890 (VG), 1892 (G), and 1906 (F) Liberty nickels; 1914S Buffalo Nickel (G) Dimes: 1918 (G), 1924S (G), 1928 (XF), and 1928D (F) Mercury dimes Quarters: 1924S SL Quarter (AG/G); and 1960D (UNC) Halves: 1920D (VG/F) and 1946S (AU) Walking Liberty halves; 1949 (XF) and 1957 (AU) Franklin Halves Dollars: 1902 (F) Morgan Nighthawk
Hello Nighthawk, As much as I am a self professed poor grader of Walkers. I would not put that coin as F12 any day. Maybe VG8 but nothing more in my opinion.
The dealer at the local coin shop said he would grade the coin as a "fine". To answer Treasurehunt's question, I paid $45 for the grab bag. Using a retail price guide and the estimated grades above, I estimated the value of all of the coins at between $100 and $200 so I am quite happy. Too bad I did not bid on the other 4 or 5 grab bags at the auction. Nighthawk
