Went to my local antique store today. Found this 1897 O barber dime labeled as just an 1897. Its just a filler probably grades F-2. It only cost me $2. G-4 lists for around $65 so i'm happy to get a key date CHEAP and fill an empty spot.
Nice catch coinhound. Did you ever here the only 1870s half dime known turned up in a shop junk box? In ancients, I am lucky, since many coins are sold as "roman coin", or "byzantine coins", or just "ancient".
Nice find! I found an 1833 large cent labeled as a 1838, I thought it was kinda funny but for 5 bux I couldn't go wrong either way. My friend found a 1883 2 over 3 shield nickel labeled as just a regular 83 a couple years ago. Its amazing what some people may overlook.
Your thinking of the 1870-S half dime. The 73-S is a common date. (And in my opinion the story of the 70-s is unbelievable. How may shops have you seen with Mint State half dimes in their junk boxes. And the 70-S was not in a holder.)
Of course sir you are right. I will change my post, (goes for showing what happens when you rely on memory. ) Remember, though, this was the early 70's, much more stuff was around back then, especially unloved half dimes. I bought a ton of capped bust ones in the late 80's all AU/BU for not that much.
nice pick up. A few years ago I bought #3 1895 S dimes, at one time from one dealer. When I got home I realized that one was an 1895 P.
