    I would guess a lamination that came off before the strike.

    A die break would have a hole in the die - raised area on the coin. I am nearly positive that is a depression on you coin. Strike through maybe, but I don't see how that lettering could be so clean.

    I agree , it looks like a lamination error of the planchet then struck .

    If I had found that coin I'd have thought of some kind of corrosion . Amazing contrast for sure .

    I found this wood 1979-D penny. It has diagonal stripes on each side.

    Fwiw - With in fine woodworking - similar grain patterns are referred to as Quilted. Not uncommon in maple. Super rare in Lincoln cents! ? That is a wild pattern for sure. Now we need curly or tiger, spalted and birds eye patterns to complete the set. :)
