you seriously got that for a penny? if so it is your lucky day... Why doesn't stuff like this happen to me?
A large cent has probably not passed a teller's cage anywhere in the USA in more than 150 years. My God, what a find!
looks to be about vg grade but pic is bad. Not buying the finding this at a bank though. Not a believable claim. Value is 10 to 15 dollars.
It wouldn't fit into the penny coin rack at the counter or in the holders inside teller's drawer. If it was back in the teller cage, the headcashier would not issue it out to the floor. They are knowledgable about these things and it is part of their job description to pull old currency recieved from deposits. I would like to hear more on how it was obtained. The teller's at the service counter would have to received it from a customer that day or kept it in their working cash bank for daily trasactions. Seems they would turn it in since they have no way to store it. This would pertain to the old large size paper notes as well.
I have had tellers that know me give me coins they sorted and a dealer I know says that a couple of tellers bring him silver about once a week.i don't know if they should be doing it or not but they do.
The OP could have been confused on the bank reference with all the excitement of the discovery. However it was acquired, if it was only treated as a penny given in change, it is a deal he will never see again. IMHO
There's no way a large cent (larger than a quarter and smaller than a half) would have been given out in change. Idiotic thread. I'll say it's worth half a cent. You should return it to the bank and get a real penny.
While some tellers do do this I seriously doubt that this is the case. For example, someone would have to have brought the coin into the bank in the first place. Exactly who, other than a thief, would be stupid enough to turn in an old large cent at a bank? For what? A shiny new penny?? Wouldn't the first attempt be at a coin shop? Given the size and obvious date on the coin, I don't believe for a second that this came from a bank since I cannot, for the life of me, reconcile how it ended up at the bank. Sorry. PS. For someone who doesn't know about the value of the coin, the OP certainly got it into the correct 2x2 with a "40" in the upper left corner?? I think my BS meter just went off......
I rescind my previous comment. I should have considered the source: http://www.cointalk.com/threads/i-paid-670-for-it.235158/ Sometimes I believe in people, only to find out that (sometimes metaphorically, in this case literally) they are a 12-13 year old kid screaming for attention....
You get these kind of things from time to time on blogs and forums everywhere. A small mind playing around with lots of time on their hands. Either he will become board here as well, or be scared off. Unfortunately, we may even see several other posts before the novelty wears off for him. I'll follow NorthKorea's lead on this one, and do the same thing.
It is possible he got it at the bank. The tellers where I bank hold any old coins, or currency for me if any come in. They know me rather well. It is possible.
this guy is full of BS He wanted to buy some junk silver so I asked him how much and he said 1 dime! All talk no action. Makes lots of bogus claims of finding tons of silver coins out of rolls also.
