So, are they supposed to be available outside the Mint? I see somebody on eBay listing them all the time, but it seems like something that wouldn't be supposed to get out...
true, the error is that they were never intended to get out to the public, just like blanks an planchets..
As I understand it, the Mint went to cancel defect coins by waffling in order to keep them out of the public's hands. I'm still trying to find a decent one at a good price.
What is the reasoning behind it? I assumed it was because there was an error on the coin. I can't see anything wrong with either of the 2 you guys posted. That being said, they are pretty messed up with the waffling so who knows lol.
good question, i tried to find a defect on mine and could not, so maybe its something with the metal or they find a defect on a few an cancel a whole batch...
I think the Mint started the waffling process in 2003 as a way to reduce costs associated with the security of transportation of defective coins back to the recycler. It has reduced the number of error coins in the hands of collectors considerably. A waffle coin is not considered a coin.
When you get tired of it you can put it in a vise and make it back into a pancake thingy...….just kidding, nice piece.
But guess what I have? From my collection. Only 3 or 4 known with this type of attribution Mint Cancelled Mint Error
