I have been getting a bunch of really good & rare collectable coins on Listia.com for the last month or so, and didn’t see anything on CoinTalk about it. It’s basically an auction site, but no cash is involved, only credits and everyone gives away their stuff for free. You get 100 credits when join, and another 100 if you link you facebook & twitter account. Those credits can be used to get anything on the site you want, for free.

The idea of the site is to get rid of the things you don’t want anymore and get new things that you do want… without using cash. I have been using credits to get coins and stamps, lots of people giving old collections. The first 200 credits you start with can go a long ways, and get some great stuff for free.

Here are just a few of the current coins available to anyone:

    http://www.listia.com/auction/48040
    http://www.listia.com/auction/48903

Every once and awhile some super rare stuff comes up, it's pretty cool what people will give away.

I have seen a few other forums mention it, anyone else been using Listia.com? I find it pretty addicting, but fun :smile

cerdsalicious.....I have to agree 100%. "Auctions for free stuff" just doesn't sound like something I'd want to get involved with. You earn 50 credits AFTER you list something you are giving away for free??? Will the Post Office accept their 'credits' for payment for shipping? I wouldn't touch this with a 20 foot pole.

Really good and rare collectable coins? 'd like to know what Listia.com (as well as the OP) considers 'good and rare collectable coins'.

The reason it hasn't been seen/discussed here is because you CAN'T get 'really good & rare collectable coins' for free (okay, for credits). If I have a 'really good & rare collectable coin' I want to sell, you better believe I want cash for it, not 'credits'.

Anyone want to 'sell' a '55 DDO Lincoln for 'credits'? If so, PM me PLEASE!!!!

I'm skeptical...BUT it seems pretty fun. I think items that require a shipping fee are paid separately with paypal and the credits only cover the actual item. The only concern I would have is by signing up, do you open up the door for mass marketing campaigns? Like a total marketing assault via email, snail-mail and phone.

And who determines how many credits you get for each item you post?

I know where you are coming from, "no such thing as free".

But the site doesn't cost anything, so no real risk here.

As for "rare"... I'm not saying you're going to get a coin valued at $100 for free, just saying users have opted to give away some pretty good coins and in some cases rare coins.

As for shipping, I have won a few auctions, and shipping was always free... after all, just shipping a coin. Seems to me about 50% of auctions currently listed are free shipping.

And for items I listed, I just requested $2 shipping fee, and got paid via paypal.

The site is not for everyone as the idea is to get rid of things you don't want to get credits, then use credits to get other stuff. Kind of a give and get feel... but it doesn't cost any money, so I like that... as I don't have much money to spend to begin with.

Let me tell you why this is a scam and will not work....

First, your dealing with credits....Which is a non-currency way of doing business. This appears to be a barting type of commerce...But it is not.

Let me tell you why...your overlooking one big aspect..

The owners of this web site (and numerous of their friends and colleges) just have to CREDIT their accounts with whatever amount they want, and they can go on a buying spree...

Buying up every item on the site from unsuspecting people..
And then they get the merchandise and can sell it through ebay for REAL money, not credits.!!!

If this were my site, I would be giving credits to the moon for this merchandise,. so I can re-sell it for real credits.. MONEY, CASH.!!
Fall for this if you want to too,..but run like Forrest from this one..

    Interesting to say the least.

But, I'm not sure if the site is more interesting than the discussion over the validity of the business.

Some doubted the success of eBay, Twitter, and Craig's List.

This site will do well since people always want to win something or go shopping with no money.

There is a chance that could be some underhanded dealing with those who have access to the data. How much is there to lose, since you are stating that you are willing to sell your stuff for credits that have no value to you.

Additonally if there is something dishonest with the business the information will get out quickly and that will be the end of "That Crazy Idea" of a web site.

Having a storage bin fill of old computer equipment and other functional junk, posting the items on a site where I may be able to purchase a "Lava Lamp" from credits that have no value.

    ...oh the joy.
