My first $10! A little worn, but i'll keep it. Series 1999 BA02378739* Also, my friend called me up and since i've been teaching him a bit about coin and paper money collecting, he told me he found a bill with a * on it. A series 1990 $100 No clue on the serial though. I'll get it from him and see if it's a rarer run of bills
Always a nice find. 3.2 million printed of the BA-* As for 1990 $100 stars the lowest printing was the G-* with 640,000
Star notes are basically used to replace notes with errors that are caught at the BEP (Bureau of Engraving and Printing). Instead of trying to produce a note with the same serial number as the damaged one a star note is released in it's place. Because they are only intended as "replacemet" notes the printing numbers are much lower and some are very valuable because of this. Note however, that the BEP will release huge runs of star notes as well. I have picked up 100 consecutive singles and once saw 100 consecutive 20s. Bought what 20s I could afford. Hope that helps.
Clembo covered what a * note is, but i'll provide a visual so you know what one looks like. Here are a couple * nots i possess. One was the last $20 * i found and the other is a series 1934E * that was given to me by my father and a $2 * that was also given to me.
Nice find! :thumb: I like the older date stars, always neat to find. That $100 might be worth something, not sure though. Nice finds. :thumb: Phoenix
Well i'm on my way to my friend's place now so i'll check his $100 out. I'll let you guys know the serial numbers when i get them
It depends on how many were printed and the condition. Just like coins. One thing to remember though is that old currency gets destroyed so it has a much shorter life span than a coin. If you find any feel free to PM me with a full serial number and relative condition or just post a pic for everyone to see.
Ok, here is a 2 dollar bill I bought for 3 bucks, it's a 1995 star note here is the serial # F 03406048* Like I said before, I know nothing about paper money so if you need more info let me know.
Series 1990 L02261792* $100 that's what he has but i looked it up and it's not a rare run. Still, would you keep a $100 *?
Used to run into this problem all of the time. If you can SPARE it keep it for now you can always spend it. If it hurts your budget let it go. Those higher denominations can hurt your wallet fast!
Well not my note. It's my friends. I think he said he was going to keep it as he's not hard up on money. I gave him a currency holder to store it in. Added bonus to my $10 star note today. I got a coffee on my ride home and in my change received two interesting $1 notes. One was a note with the serial B63333669D. Series 2003A I liked the numbers so i'll keep that. The other was a pretty nice condition series 1969D $1 note!!! It was in better shape than some of the series 2003 notes i had in my wallet!!! That one made me smile
nice find on the 1969D! thats pretty old to still be in circulation! i would keep that $100 bill just because its an old style. i've heard the mint is actually shredding old style notes becuase they do not have the security features like on the newer bills and are easier to counterfeit. nice star!
I actually have a 1990 $100 that i added to mart of my collection. I don't know why i kept it. It's serial I25068506A. I know, nothing special about it, but it's one of the last old style bills i have seen so i decided to keep it. It's very hard to keep a $100 bill that's only worth $100 as a collectable
oops, the mint is only pulling the 5,10,and 20 $ bills. they are still keeping the "old style" 50 and $100 bills in circualtion.
Great find :thumb: I dont have anything aproching that in value LOL but I do have a nice 1935 Silver Cert Star note in my collection :smile Here is a link http://www.banknotebank.com/coin_view.aspx?id=907251 :kewl:
