But for less than 10GBP I am not complaining... Gordian III and Serapis. Pentassarion, Markianopolis, Moesia. AYT K M ANT ΓOΡΔIANOC AYΓ, laureate, draped bust of Gordian right, facing draped bust of Serapis left, modius on head UP MNOFILOU MARKIANOPOLITW, Triumphal arch or city gate with three portals, surmounted by three statues. E in doorway. Varbanov 1945.
Cracks like that are a natural part of the flan making process. While I do expect them to sell for less, the coin is a normal and undamaged specimen. I avoid the cracks that look like they could get worse or break the coin but wide wedges are stabile.
Love that reverse! The crack wouldn't bother me at all. My favorite cracked coin is this Max Thrax from Anazarbus.
That's not a common type, and it's in great shape. The crack does nothing whatsoever to detract from it.
Thanks guys, I am looking forward to receiving it. Then it will be weighed, measured and generally fondled.
I love it too Pish!! I think it's a fabulous find, especially at that price!! Like all the others posted, the 'crack' just enhances it's appeal for me and makes it look ancient.....
I like the interesting architectural type of the OP. Some people collect architectural types and some sale catalogs emphasize them. My "Catalog Contents" site lists some references: http://esty.ancients.info/catalogs/architectural.html
The scenery on the reverse is so spectacular that one would hardly notice a crack somewhere on the flan Q
Regarding Valentinian's post, Tameanko's Monumental Coins is a very enjoyable read. I recommend it highly.
Pish, that's a fantastic coin! The reverse is wonderful. The cracks-- bah, a side effect of striking large bronze flans. Nice score for £10
I have ordered Tameanko's Monumental Coins, it is coming from the States, so about three weeks to wait. They (Amazon) have another copy for the same price as mine (9GBP) then the prices go up exponentially. So thanks Warren and JA
I really like the coin P.P. I don't have any coins with two heads on them, except for the Dioscuri. Great pick-up.
I recommended some books on architectural types. Now one of the most interesting, "Price and Trell," is for sale in the next CNG e-auction. http://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=307421 It is not mine and I won't bid on it because I have it. I recommend it for those of you who are interested in architecture on provincial coins (not on Roman imperial coins).
that's a fantastic coin for the price pish, like everyone else pretty much...the crack doesn't really detract much from the coin for me. i LOVE the reverse, that gate is awesome, but i always like to see serapis! the surface looks like it has that "crystallization" pattern on it some of the silver coins get sometimes..is that a AE things as well? my largest crack...
