Cant find the thread but last year I had mentioned the goals for 2014. Complete 12 Caesars Set - Check Complete Main Lucilla Set - Check, Bonus finding a rare reverse that I didnt think I would ever acquire. Assemble More Roman Tetradrachms - Check Get more Byzantine - Not Good Add More Greeks - Not Good Add More Republics - So Not Good 2014 was a great year for my ancient collecting. I scored a ton of bargains for various types, I was most excited to get my Shapur I for less then $40. What are my goals for 2015? More Roman Tetradrachms - I hope to acquire more early tetradrachms. I still refuse to add Potins. Byzantines - As much as I try I just cant find a love for them, but I would still like to add a few next year. Early types are the most appealing to me. Roman Republics - Price tends to keep me from getting many. Ebay deals are few and far between and VC deals you have to be quick. I dont expect to add many but who knows. Roman Provincials - My main focus for 2015. I really enjoyed the ones I have added & prices tend to be reasonable still, unlike imperials nowadays. Greeks - Not getting my hopes up for a big year with these. Again, prices are high, especially for silver. Bronzes are affordable at times but I just dont actively seek them out.
If you consider Provincials 'reasonable' we must be looking at different Provincials. Of course anything almost seems reasonable when you are looking at 30mm rarities with fancy mythological types. Where do you draw the line with tetradrachms? When do the wanted silvers stop and the evil Potins start?
my goals are generally more similar to tifs. with that being said..as some of you know i have very long list, and some i'll probably hit more than others this year. greek coins are stilla week spot in my collection, as are roman republicans, i'll probably go for some of those as well. i'll probably buy fewer coins this year than last, but i'll spent more cash on the ones i do likely. but i could be wrong.
My goal is to be an extremely serious coin-collector in 2015 ... => absolutely zero laughing!! Goals: a) more animal coins b) coins with animals on 'em c) archaic Greek animal coins d) Roman coins with sweet animal reverses and sneaky animals on the obverse e) a coin with a grasshopper on it (kinda like Doug's coin) f) a Naboteeneese coin (but one with a cool animal on it) g) a Roman Republic animal-coin (but no chariots, for that doesn't seem to count?) ... oh, and it has to be purchased for less than $30, so Bing will be impressed! h) more animal coins ... okay, break it up (there's nuthin' to see here)
My rather arbitrary but budget-minded goal for 2015 - spend 1/5th of the money I did in 2014 and have the same amount of fun while doing so.
After Treb. Gallus I will stop with tets. I've had two valerian I and several others after him get BD but never before him. I have a very soured experience with potins yet many other bronzes I have are ok. California mostly had a dry climate except August with the tropical humidity.
I shocked myself into getting at least 3 coins on my want list that have eluded me either rarity wise or not enough money wise. things are looking up for 2015 still very focused on my "coin with insects" collection. and my Belgium type coins.
My goal for 2015 : coming back to ancients. Looking at other people's coins is fun, but showing my new ones before you folks get bored of seeing my ancient ancients is fun either Q
My main goal to pass 90 Roman Imperial rulers has succeeded. I wanted to get some Greek coins but never got around to it. I managed to get one Roman Republic coin under $30 that is decent. I postponed getting that Ilyria bull until next year. Goals for 2015 are; Pass 100 Roman Imperial Rulers Find some decent AE Denarii before and during the Severn Dynasty era. Find more decent Roman Republic coins under $30 Obtain a bunch of decent but low cost Greek coins Obtain some Syrian Antioch Tetradrachms Obtain some Nabataean coins Obtain some of those large Ptolemy coins. That's about it for now. Byzantines: I have a few but I'm not planning on getting any. Roman Provincials: I may get a few that are substitute coins for Roman Imperial rulers, maybe. Not too interested in Potins, I don't have any either. I do like some of the coins from Deultum because they have Latin legends. Greek: No silver, too expensive most of the time. Roman Republic: Most are too expensive. Carthage: I have one coin but these are on very low priority. India Region: Also on low priority. China: Not interested in getting more. I have a few and that's enough.
My goal for 2014 was to buy just enough Ancient coins, Greek and Roman, so my wife did not get too upset with me. Goal accomplished. My goal for 2015 is to try and increase my purchases without upsetting the spousal unit. (I don't think I get the setting a goal idea since I really don't have a goal)
I hear ya, brother (that's a great idea) => sadly, I seem to break this resolution annually (apparently quitting smoking was even easier than this current assignment!!)
My goal is the same as always. Buy coins that catches my eye provided they don't drain my wallet completely empty.
Congratulations on the 12 Caesars and Lucilla set, and I've really enjoyed seeing your silver tetradrachms - you've picked out a bunch of winners.
My goals might be organize a little more and pay a little more attention to what I own. Aww, who am I kidding.
Well, I have far too tight a budget to set any lofty goals for myself. A Nabataean silver or two would be nice. A Sassanian, a couple Judaean, Arabia provincial, books, books, books (man they are expensive!) a second job to enable me to have a better budget
Best of wishes on the Nabataean silver, seriously. Even the "common" ones are exceedingly rare compared to common Roman or even Greek silver. The only reason they don't cost thousands of dollars apiece is that nobody wants them. I bought one over the course of the year, and even then had to do it on a 3-month layaway...
