Good news! I am befriending two dealers, one of them gave me a free coin!

I went in to a dealers shop in New York City today, and it was the second time I had seen him, my mom got me a coin for Christmas from him, and he said he would take me into his safe next time I come! I am really excited, especially since I am only a year into the hobby and 16 years old. Today, since he knows I like German coins, he gave me a 1922 A 3 Mark coin for free!! I check the value of the coin on the NGC price guide for world coins, in its MS condition it is about $14, but it may be cleaned, which is why he gave it free, but I am still very excited. Just thought I would let you all know, and if I may ask, have your dealers ever given you free coins?

I have had them toss in stuff when I make larger purchases, but never anything free, no.

I think he just gave it to me because he knows I will be back, I see a lot of his stuff is way over priced, which worries me I might have to turn him down, but I am sure that I can find something worth buying, his ASE's are well priced.

Sounds like you may be establishing a Dealer/collector relationship. Good for you dear fellow. :)

Some stuff overpriced by this guy? Next time you see something that you need for your collection (and feel that it's overpriced) ask the dealer "what's the best you can do me for this one"? Lots of times these guys over inflate the prices to see what they can get. 7 out o' 10 times you can "talk 'em down". If he don't budge, and you don't think the price is fair, you don't budge either.

Once after a transaction with a dealer, I mentioned how I had some bank wrapped rolls of 2010 Dimes, this was last year, and he said he'd buy them when I brought them in. I forgot that I wanted to pick up some ATB quarters and instead of charging me for them he gave them to me on the agreement that I would come back with the dime rolls.

ok, thanks for the advice, I probably will go see him again when I have time in the next two weeks. There is also another dealer that I have been to another 2 times, his coins seem much more reasonably priced, and most are in NGC holders. I got an AU peace dollar from him for $32.95, which is just about at the melt value of the coin, there are a few people in the shop, the dealer who worked with me was nice, but he seemed a little gruff and he had a glass eye, which threw me off that he was always looking in two directions, but its not his fault.
