yesturday was the best coin finding day i ever had. first, i found a 1956 jefferson nickel in change from my mom. it is in pretty good shape. second, me and my mom went to the twin city days my town has every year. they have lots of vendors up there. i was looking around different vending tents and i saw a man selling mint sets. i was looking at them and i saw a 1964 mint set for $10! i bought it up quick because it was the last one there. it has a silver half dollar, silver quarter, silver dime, nickel, and penny. they all look the way they did when they came out of the mint. even the envlope and letter in it is in brand new shape. after we left there, we had to get some food at the grocery store. i saw a penny on the ground and picked it up and it was a 1949D wheat penny. so in all i got a 1956 nickel, 1949D wheat penny, and a 1964 mint set in just one day without going to a flea market. i dont know the odds in someone getting a wheat penny in change and dropping it in a parking lot and a coin collector coming and picking it up, do you? have any of you guys found old coins everywhere you go and your not even looking for any? that is the first time i have. you never find pre 1960 nickels in change any more. or wheat pennies for that fact. and where else are you going to find a 1964 last year silver mint set for $10? that was the first time for me and i hope it happens at least once in every coin collectors life.

Great story! Thanks for sharing it with us,

I find many pre-1960 nickels, but that is due to the fact that I search hundreds of rolls, and thousands of individual coins, every year.

Love it when I hear stories like your's, though. :high5:

I would say the odds are slim and none. You don't find many wheaties and pre 1960 nickels because people like me toss them into a jar when they find them. Most aren't worth anything, but I can not bring myself to spend them.

Back in 1995 a friend lost a five dollar bet to another guy at work - to get even he bought five dollars worth of pennies. He did not look at them he just cracked them open and dumped them into a little gift bag. Needless to say one roll was nothing but indian cents. Nothing but common dates in AG condition, but still a nice find.

Neither do I, but about 3-4 weeks ago, I found a 1956 wheatie at a park. This park is where we (my Cross-Country team) meet/ met every morning to go running, so it had to have been dropped the day before or else I would have seen it.

Nice finds - especially since the penny was found in a parking lot.

My mum found a wheat penny in our garden yesterday...but seeing as were several thousand miles from america...it's prob one of mine that I dropped sometimes.

I also found one of those large copper Cartwheel Pennys in a car park years ago...one of the very first coins I got.
