I bought this book today off of the bay Authoritative Reference on Commemorative Coins 1892 - 1954 Are their any others that people recomend????
This is a favorite, but I really like q. David Bowers' writing style. A guide book to US Commemorative coins. http://www.amazon.com/Guide-United-States-Commemorative-History-rarity-values-grading-varieties/dp/0794822568/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1281316414&sr=1-1'
There's a larger (and therefore more expensive) version. Commemorative Coins of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia by Q. David Bowers, 1992.
Thanks guys. I just bought the short version. Kagen: "more expensive" might be an understatement. The only one on amazon is 10X the cost of the short version, but it might really not be expensive because if one was going to buy some supper high end like 5K plus commems then 300 dollars for the education to buy right is defenitly not a bad deal. I guess it depends on how one values the marginal utility of education.
Have to know where to look. I found four copies of the "larger and more expensive" version online for between $20 and $30 each., then three more copies at $40. You might try Commemorative Coins of the United States by Anthony Swiatek The Encyclopedia of United States Silver and Gold Commemorative coins 1892 - 1954 by the same author (This may be the one he wrote with Walter Breen. Found another copy, yes it is Apparently there is more than one edition and in the later version he extends it to include the 1982 - 89 coins as well.) I've found a couple of these under $20. Quite a few more between $20 and $30.
