Friend of mine showed me a couple of $1 gold pieces. Under a 8x or 10x loupe, they had some very small black dots on them. He keeps them in some dirty flips with visible black stuff in the flips. I was wondering if you think the black spots could be surface debris, or more serious? Don't have pics.

    Thanks!

    They could be copper spots.

Sometimes you do find a gold coin with a black spot - it's the result of the alloy mix. It doesn't really hurt the coin any but it can be detracting when it comes to eye appeal. But if as you say there is black stuff in the flips - that may be what it is too.
