I'm building a post-1840 type set of gold coins, minus the stellas. How many varieties are there? I know of 3 types of $1 peices, 2 $2 1/2 dollar, 1 $3 , 2 $5, 2 $10, and 2 $20 Also, how much do the $3 and each type of $1 cost in XF-AU?:eating: :eating: :eating: :eating: :eating:
The three dollar is apt to be a bit of a pain, they didn't make those for very long. You're looking at between one and two thousand dollars for a coin in EF or AU. They're awful pretty, though. Good luck, Fish
You should be able to find the type one and type three one dollar pieces in low MS grades for around three hundred dollars. The type 2 is much tougher.Expect to spend $700 -$1000 for XF-AU for the common date. The three dollar piece is really tough. My advice would be to buy a lower mintage year in XF-AU after 1878 . I have been searching for this coin for a while. Seen a few 1854,1855, 1878, the three most common dates. I hope to have some luck at the ANA show in a couple of weeks. There are plenty of lower grade problem coins out there, but not many nicer better date coins. Expect to pay at least $1500 for an Ef -40 if your lucky enough to find them problem free. Hence the very high prices. Good luck
re: varieties I'm with you. BUT some folks are pickier about it : Liberties $2.50 / $5 / $10 have 2 varieties (with and without motto), and $20 have 3 vars - no motto, with motto and TWENTY D., with motto and TWENTY DOLLARS. And hey... for the dreamer in ALL of us, there are two stellas for sale at heritageauctions.com...
