Where can I go to learn more about gold certificates and grading? I realize there aren't any 1927 gold certs, but I may be interested in getting one or two 1928 ones.. Though I have zero experience with bank notes and their value.. :(

The best way in my opinion to obtain information on grading and pricing is to use exactly what people are paying for grade wise by looking at eBay completed auctions as well as Heritage completed auctions at ha.com - no single auction sets the market but overall these items are worth exactly what people are willing to pay. You can see the price curve for higher graded notes as well as look at the images especially of notes in graded holders. Get a feel for the grade you are interested in by looking at the images, and a feel for the price based on what people are paying for - don't look at unsold or asking prices, look at the hammer price.

If you plan on spending a considerable amount of money, invest in a book that covers the type you are interested in (large size, small size, etc.) and consider using Track and Price to see price history as well as note history and population, to see which notes are common or rare, when you might see another one if one gets away (VERY important to be able to let a note walk if the price isn't right, and it's easier if you know they come up a couple times a year on eBay for example) as well as seeing what a note might have been graded as or paid for before. For instance I bought a raw note I thought was Fine that I found out had been in a VF20 holder - now I know!

Good luck... the 1928 gold notes are quite affordable until you hit the $100 denomination. Even the $50 can be had in a decent grade. I got lucky on my $100 and got a steal - you can too, if you are patient. Let the game come to you...

You need to get the book "United States Paper Money Grading Standard" by Herbert J. Kwart. This book will give you all the information for grading all currency printed. But it does give you all the terms and how to that you will need for currency grading. Good luck. :smile:smile It was printed in 1984, but still good. It was published by Five Seasons Publishers, P.O. Box 397, Hiawatha, Iowa 52233 [Do not know if current]
