I was looking at two 1/10 oz gold eagles...1986 and 2001. I just noticed that the 2001 appears to have very tiny, mostly vertical lines along the front of Liberty's dress that run up to just under the bust. I don't see these on the 1986. Was this a design change to add more detail or is there something else about the 1986? :rolling:

I would say it was the strike of the coin..as the die's wear..so do the details left in the metal. Check out some of the AGE I have posted and you will see what I mean..

    Good hunting.

RickieB, I knew you would come through for me. :thumb:

It's definitely not wear to the coin, so it must be from a worn die and/or weak strike. How does this affect how I should grade it? At all?

    Thanks!
