There have been none issued since 2003. Has the US Mint stopped making five dollar gold commemoratives?

The Salt Lake City Olympics coins had low mintages and I think the Wright Bros had a low mintage gold one. I guess they do not make much money on the low mintage coins.

The production of any commem, gold or otherwise, is entirely dependent upon the laws authorizing the commems as passed by Congress. The mint only produces what it is told to produce. They have no say in the matter whatsoever.

That is true, duh I forgotabout that. By the way I bet that many of those low mintage ms (as opposed to pr) gold commems will have their day.

Most of the gold commemoratives from the 1980s sell at very reasonable prices for both MS and PR when compared to ordinary bullion coins. The closer you get to the present, the more the coins seem to cost. Since the mintages generally trend downward for gold commems, this presumably is evidence that people much prefer the silver commemorative coins and just don't buy the modern gold anymore.

I once heard the saying, "A camel is a horse designed by committe". This explains alot about our coins.
