Plated post mint. Lots of companies did this to sell. Not worth anything beyond face value as it is now considered damaged.

And while technically what furryfrog says is true about damage and value,
I think these are selling for .50 and .75 cents. So more than face value.
    EBay
10 gold plated for $6.99 (.70 cents per)
Roll of 40 West Va gold plated $16 ( .40 cents per)
    One gold plated $2
    1999 gold plated all 5 $9.95 ($2 per)
Roll of 40 Maryland gold plated $16, Missouri roll 40 $16, Ohio $16, etc.
3 1976 gold plated by the Merrick Mint $9.95 they show you an S mm and then say MINT MARKS CHOSEN AT RANDOM
    1999 set for $3 that's a better deal. (.60 each)
    2004 set of 5 gold plated $4.95 ($1 each)
2017 5 coin set gold plated $12.95 ($2.60 per, steep)
    Connecticut gold plated $1.25
    2004 set of 5 $6.99 ($1.40 each)

So it has a little value over face.

Yeah, unfortunately they are sold at high prices on late night TV and such to people who don't know any better.

When the heirs go to sell the "fabulous collection", they get told the sad truth and dump them in the coinstar or bank. They circulate, get found and show up here.
