1906 au55 Barber Quarter sells for MS63 money. Did Pcgs undergrade this coin, this badly? http://www.ebay.com/itm/GOLD-CAC-St...azlM5quLe17a4N4gfBmaY%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
No. PCGS did not miss on the coin that badly. This coin was sold on ebay a few months ago as a fixed price BIN for $650 and the buyer posted it on the PCGS boards for everyone to ohhhh and ahhhh. The range of guessed grades was around AU55 through MS64 or so, but quite a few folks thought AU58+. The buyer then quietly consigned the coin and, after ebay fees and consignor fees, took a bath.
I agree with Tom. While it is a nice looking coin, it clearly has some wear and belongs in an AU holder. And while it might have some claim to "AU63" status, this issue is not scarce in the uncirculated grades and I would much rather have an uncirculated example for uncirculated money.
Also the "High" end id was more than likely to the fact that there are two kinds of groupies bidding on it. CAC fans seeing the gold bean and thinking they can crack it and get a much better grade, or leave it in and call it a "62". And then the other groupies are the seller's client base, bidiots some may say. Paying top dollar for all the seller's coins. Some slip, but the seller usually gets great results.
I think they got it about right , I do agree with CAC that its a AU-58 coin and shouldn't make MS though . Looks like too many small circulation hits . But I'd like to see it in hand as the pics aren't the best .
I put in a snipe on that one, but for AU55 money and obviously I was quickly overtaken. Still a great looking coin IMHO, but rattlers bug me. You want to see real crazy bidding, check out the GOLD CAC IKE. Also a great looking coin, but geez.
Well it looks like I killed off another thread, great. I either always show up late to the party, or everyone bails once "that guy" shows up. I'll be optimistic and say it's the former.
The Ike got bid up so high because of the holder... a more rare and collectible one PLUS the gold CAC was an added bonus.
Well thanks! I was suggesting that I'm "that guy" since I seem to have the last post in many a thread around here. I was thinking I was sort of the kiss of death for threads, LOL.
