Gold 1887-S Liberty w/little story

    Team,

    Here is a pretty nice 1887-S Liberty Five Dollar gold coin. I took it to the dealer in town a few years ago and showed it to our ONLY coin shop owner who (now) I've got a pretty good relationship with. He casually joked about carefully filing off the S and the other old fellow who was playing cards with him chuckled. I didn't realized what he was talking about until I got home, looked at an online guide and then his joke hit me...

    lol, I think he'd have trouble convincing anyone that that coin is a proof!

    Your right, but I suspect there were proof coins in circulation. Franklin and Kennedy halves back in the late 60s.

    I swapped pictures. This one is using more light and a macro lens. Much better IMO.
