This winter i relied mostly on wood for heat.. after a couple of flue fires (and being scared out of my wits), i was coming to the conclusion i wasn't doing something right, or just wasn't capable of operating a wood furnace. Then someone told me about throwing rock salt into the fire to keep the creosote down, i am from Missouri and in an act of desperation i did just that and couldn't believe the results.. and as an added protection, i put up a representative statue for Vesta(she was originally Hebe, but a goddess can change careers can't she ), pay tribute to her in salerium occasionally and all is well at the hearth..just thought i'd share this with ya, since i've become more familiar with Greek and Roman deities through you all here at Cointalk.
What a beautiful photo! It looks like an old oil painting. Here's the goddess of my bathroom Venus Cloacina, goddess of the Great Sewer of Rome. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ancients-a-deity-worthy-of-respect.251682/
Nice pic ominus1, here's the head to go with your statue. Denarius 55 BC Bust of Vesta right, temple of Vesta, 19mm, 3.14gm. Crawford 428/1.
Glad all is well at the hearth G!!! Best I can do for you is a Fire-altar with attendants - SASANIAN EMPIRE. Shapur II, 309-379 AD. AR Drachm (24 mm, 3.77 gm)
Do the Lares and Penates show up on coins? I'm not familiar with any reverse types that depict them, but certainly they are household gods that any good pagan should honor.
Lares do... Roman Republic, L. Caesius 112-111 BCE AR denarius, 3.92 gm Obv: bust of Vejovis (some references say Apollo?) from behind, head turned left, holding a thunderbolt, legend AP; dotted border. Rev: Lares praestites seated with heads left, dog between, bust of Vulcan above, with tongs behind; legend LA-RE; dotted border. Ref: Crawford 298/1. Sydenham 564. RSC Caesia 1
How delightful, @ominus1 ! I have too many Vesta coins to post them all, so I'll just pick this one of Julia Mamaea on which the goddess looks more than a little like Pete Townshend of The Who: Come to think of it, Julia Mamaea looked more than a little like Pete Townshend, too: Drawing by @Jasper Burns
Seriously - the gods were so much cooler then... no one just walks out with 2 cold beers and a pizza anymore! Now that's a god I would pray to!
