I am new to these forums and have an 1891-S Morgan that I would like to get some feedback on. It has not been graded professionally. I am new to numismatics and trying to get some pointers on grading (I have researched sites and forums - I'm not asking for a guide). Luckily it was a cheap coin (less than $20.00) so if it is worth only the silver content, that's fine, too. Thanks in advance. Message me later for that hug!

you didn't do terrible for $20, from what i can see i would call it Au details (low AU 50-53) details cleaned, the obverse appears to have scratch marks in the fields which means at one point it was improperly cleaned. Grading is all about practice look at as many coins as you can, also buy PCGS's guide to grading coins and counterfeit detection. it costs around $40 but is an amazing book that will help you improve your grading skills

Well I think it would come back a AU Details. If you look at the fields there are cleaning lines from someone harming the coin. So yea you got a bullion coin or a bit better.
    Still neat though.

    AU-55 Details - Harshly Cleaned.

The hairlines scratches on both sides combined with a complete lack of mint luster relative to its technical grade point to a harsh cleaning.

    Welcome to CT:welcome:

As far as the grade I agree with PFCBEGA and Duke.

Here is a link to a good grading guide online that will get you going in the right
    direction.

But nothing beats having coins in hand and looking at them with
a good grading guide book with the diagnostics for each grade in front of you.

Best of luck and most of all enjoy.
