Gilded Koala coins with tiny hairs/fibers?

I picked up a wholesale lot of 10 2009 Australian Gilded Koalas in original packaging from ModernCoinMart, and I've noticed something strange. Each and every coin has what appear to be many, many tiny hairs or fibers on them. They are actually on the capsule, both inside and outside the capsule, and in some cases sticking out of the capsule (where the top and bottom come together). They are also everywhere inside the case that holds the capsule. These are only visible under magnification (4x), and only when you catch the angle of the light correctly. Since they are on every one of the 10 coins, I decided to check the 2 other Gilded Koalas I own (one each of 2008 and 2009) and they are on these coins as well, although not as numerous. So it appears to be an issue with these coins. My non-gilded Koalas, which do not come in such a case, do not have this problem.

Has anyone else noticed this on a Gilded Koala?

  3. I have the 2008 and 2009 Gilded Koalas as well (no 2010 yet) so decided to check this out for you. I did not see anything until I used my 10x loupe. Then I saw the black fibers that you described. I wiped the outside of the capsule and was able to get rid of them. It looks to me like they are from the inside of the case and are not on the coin. I thought I was the only one on the planet who had these. Good to hear there are others interested in them. TC

    TC, thanks for the reply.

I'm beginning to think this is a combination of an issue with the case, coupled with carelessness by the dealer. One of the capsules was completely apart when I opened the case, so my guess is that all 10 were opened to check for high-grade potential, and then not completely closed, allowing the fibers to enter the capsules. Looks like I'll be taking a big loss on Ebay when I re-sellt them. Oh well, live and learn.

  5. I would contact ModernCoinMart and let them know that you are not satisfied with the purchase. Also, there may be a way for you to carefully open the capsules (using white cotton gloves) and then apply some gentle air pressure (perhaps using some sort of suction bulb or fan) to remove the black fibers. Hope all goes well. TC
