Hi I just moved to the States and I decided to begin collecting Silver Dollars. However, I'm not very sure I started the right way. So far, I bought the UNC Dollar sets of 2007 and 2008 from the US Mint, thinking it would look kinda nice when the presidential dollars are through. Now I see no plans for the US Mint to make a 2009 UNC silver dollar :desk: Also, I bought a Proof Lincoln dollar. My plan was to buy the UNC version of the "normal" dollars everytime they come out, and also, budget permitting, start working backwards and collect a smany years and mints I can, as long as I can afford at least an XF. Does this sound wise or absolutely dumb? When deciding between UNC and Proof, what's the rule of thumb? Bare in mind I do this basically as a hobby, not as an investment, but it feels better when you know you're actually putting your money on something that is gonna increase more in value. Thanks.
If your into collecting because you just like the coins, then collect what turns "you" on. There is no method to the madness. The last thing you want to do is buy something just to have it. You'll soon not have the money you'll need to purchase things you really like. Also you most likely will never get what you paid for coins that you decide to part with. Educate yourself, better yet, give yourself time to become a little knowledgeable about the coins you want to collect. Mistakes will be made, how bad they are can be up to you. Good Luck and Keep on Collecting!!! Allen
Thanks for the reply. I do collect what turns me on. In the last couple of years what turns me on are world silver coins (including US of course). My question was a bit more specific. As for parting with coins, my experience so far is breaking even with what I paid for them, which is quite fine considering I only sell (or trade) doubles. Luis
Luis, collect what you like and what your budget will bear. I assume, when you refer to silver dollars, that you mean American Silver Eagles. Hang in there buddy, I think the mint will release them later this year.
