I've never sent a coin to get it graded. How much does it cost?

What if (for example) I sent a 1943 cent that I thought was MS-65 (worth $4.00) to get it graded? Would they still charge me $20 or whatever the fee is? Is that why there are hardly any coins graded only worth a few bucks?

It depends on the grading company - and how you submit it. They have different tiers for submission that cost various ammounts. Some charge as much as $30 - others are $9. I would suggest you visit the web sites for the various grading companies and check the prices yourself.

But in essence - you have answered your own question. Why pay $20 to slab a coin that is only worth $4 ?

Here is a very simple rule. If the coin you bought is not a condition rarity, rare, valuable, an error, or a key, don't waste the money to slab it. The top grading services are not cheap, and the price like GDJMSP said is only based on what tier is used. Value of the coin has very little to do with it.
Being a dealer, we don't get to use the formula often. People like slabs, so we deal with it. Collectors have much more lattitude in their abilities.
