Is this the variety they show in the book? Not sure.

My book shows the exact coin in the fact of die cracks and what not.

If you are looking at the 3N-1865-302 ( 001.5), The crack does appear the same, but the digits do not show the repunching. Compare the top serif of the "1" , notice how in the CPG, you can see the second top of a "1" to the west about the width of the one. This is not visible on your coin. The RPD also has a secondary image for each other digit. I can't see them in the large photo of the date. Unless there is more than the photo shows, it is a different die without the repunched that cracked in the weakest place.

I just thought it was Cool to buy this one and a 1864 two-cent piece for $12.64 off SLEEZE-Bay

Hey, it is a cool coin! Imagine that the die could barely hold together to strike those. There were over 130 obv. dies for 1865 3cent and they were often used until cracked too badly to continue.

Jessash, I knew I had one, but had to find the photos. Here they are, compare the last one to yours to see what I meant.

    Keep looking!

Thank you, This series is fun to try and cherrypick. Show dealers don't seem to pay much attention to the 3 CN varieties. The prices aren't too bad either as it is not a popular series ! Good for a collector, bad for investment. Also some of the series are Proofs only. Good luck.

    Jim,
The RPD is pretty obvious on your coin--that's a wide repunching! :thumb:
I can just see it on the first coin...obviously the same die.

Kurt, you must see better than I, as I could not see the repunching, such as the "1". That is why I thought the original coin was not a RPD. Maybe Jessash will be a happy person!

    Jim,
I honestly did not see the RPD before your coin, but now that I compare the two I see evidence of the 1 left on the OP's coin, which might be a later die state or details were lost due to wear/corrosion?

Well Jessash, I certainly respect Kurt's opinion. I would hang on to the coin until you might be able to get more detailed photos of the date area.

Kurt, I was looking at the extra "1" where it appeared "under" the level of the crack, so I thought it would be more resistant to wear ( like the '94/94 IHC still visible in G grade), but I am still not sure I see it in the photo. Sure is fun, when these pop up!

I really can't see it after seeing Desertgem's, but just having it is good enough for me. I think I got a good deal between the two.
