Just got this Lincoln in the mail Today! I was meant to start a collection again. After having a pretty good one 9 years ago, I sold it due to hard times. I made about 1/4 of what I paid and vowed never to let it happen again!!!!!! Please give me your opinion on this coin. Do EYE see TWO EYES????
When I see a letter or date slightly off I think the same thing, not this time though. If thats the case then why have any proofs been considered collectable DD's?
All Proof coins are struck at least twice, but they don't usually exhibit any signs of it other than an ultra sharp strike. But every so often one of the dies will move a bit on the second strike and you end up with what appears to be doubling. But it looks different than hub doubling. With hub doubling you should have split serifs and a notch where the two impressions overlap. This coin does not have that that I can see. Which is why I think it was due to being struck twice. Just my opinion, and as you should know by now, when it comes to errors I am often mistaken. Could be this time as well.
Of course I always welcome your input and thank you for checking this coin out and taking the time to reply But I do hope your wrong. Please anyone who knows alot about proof lincolns, respond!!!!!
rujam, It is definitely strike doubling! I have quite a few of Proof coins with same type of doubling. There are many Proof Coins with Doubled Die doubling on them! Some have little value or collectibility while others are highly sought after. I have many 1973-S Proof Cents in Proof Sets and by themselves that are Doubled Dies as well as several Varieties of the 1970-S Proof Cent "Doubled Die" Cents. Check out Coneca's "Variety Master Listing" on their' Website at "www.conecaonline.org" ....... Frank
I checked out the Coneca site, very cool! But it did not have the effect maybe it should have. I found photos from there that are at least in the same family of doubling as mine, and they are called RPM's! I think it is definit that some of the areas on this coin are strike doubling. But what about the Mint Mark? What about the EYE? Proofs are struck more than once and I understand that, I believe the "S" looks filled because of the other offset SSS's filling the holes. Can there be strike doubling on an are and other doubling on another area? I have had proof coins before that had slight shifts in the letters like, IN GOD WE TRUST ect... But not the MM, and not the EYE, and Not a Double edged Face. Also the Lettering on LIBERTY seems to get much thicker from the L to the Y.
Proof coins often exhibit strike doubling due to the excessive force employed. Strike doubling can be evident on a coin with a true doubled die or true RPM. This from the bottom of page 2 of this link....http://www.cherrypickersguide.com/images/DieDoubling.pdf
Well its a letdown, I will keep on searching my coins though I try not to be stubborn, but what about the doubled eye? I see now that the other items have the (shelf) like offset, but help me out with the eye thing. Thanks for your time.
