How many of you have seen or obtained the German 2006 commemorative 2 Euros coin? It commemorates the State of Schleswig-Holstein.This is the first in a series of commemorative 2 Euro coins commemorating the German states. One state will be commemorated in each year. Aidan.
Sounds pretty cool. Are they doing the States that still existed when the actual country of Germany (German Empire) came into being in 1871? or are they doing just the current states? Anyplace better than ebay to get one or two?
Hello I've got one of them the other day at a coin show. There are actually five of them as five mints are operating in Germany with different letters Cucumbor
It's just for the current states..16 in all including Berlin. The original German Confederation had about the same number, 16 http://www.history.kessler-web.co.uk/FeaturesEurope/GermanyMap1815.htm
Strictly speaking, there are four mints (which are state operated by the way) and five production facilities in Germany, hence the five different mintmarks. And yes, I got my SH coin on the very first day at the Bundesbank branch office here in Düsseldorf. They are not exactly rare - total mintage is a little more than 30 million. Details about this issue, and other €2 commems, can be found here, for example: http://www.2-euro.eu/ Christian
Umm, the Federal Republic of Germany, founded in 1949, is not quite the same as the German Empire founded in 1871. So it will of course be the current 16 states of this country that will be honored. The order of the issues follows the Bundesrat (second chamber of the federal parliament) presidency. This year SH has that presidency; next year it will Mecklenburg Western Pomerania. Here is a schedule, with the buildings to be depicted in () ... 2006: Schleswig-Holstein (Holstentor Lübeck) 2007: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Schweriner Schloss) 2008: Hamburg (Michaeliskirche) 2009: Saarland (Ludwigskirche Saarbrücken) 2010: Bremen (Bremer Rathaus) 2011: Nordrhein-Westfalen (Kölner Dom) 2012: Bayern (Schloss Neuschwanstein) 2013: Baden-Württemberg (Kloster Maulbronn) 2014: Niedersachsen (St. Michael Hildesheim) 2015: Hessen (Paulskirche Frankfurt) 2016: Sachsen (Zwinger Dresden) 2017: Rheinland-Pfalz (Porta Nigra Trier) 2018: Berlin (Schloss Charlottenburg) 2019: Sachsen-Anhalt (Magdeburger Dom) 2020: Thüringen (Wartburg Eisenach) 2021: Brandenburg (Schloss Sanssouci Potsdam) Whether it will actually be these buildings that are going to be on the coins ... well, we will see. In BW for example the first plan was to put Heidelberg Castle on the €2 piece, then the state government voted for Maulbronn Monastery which is on the Unesco Cultural Heritage list ... Christian
Saarland was the last state to join West Germany prior to the reunification of East Germany into West Germany in 1990.Saarland joined in 1957.Saarland had a 4 coin set denominated in Franken (derived from the French Francs) struck at the Paris Mint. The 100 Franken often turns up. Aidan.
Right, and next year Germany will issue a €10 collector coin "50 Years State of Saarland". http://www.bundesfinanzministerium.de/SharedDocs/Bilder/muenzen/saarland,property=default.jpg But such issues, or coins commemorating states, kingdoms, etc. that do not exist any more, would be far beyond the scope of the €2 commem series. And in case the states of Berlin and Brandenburg merge within the next ten years, the 2018 issue could be turned into a Berlin-Brandenburg coin and the series would end in 2020. Christian
2 euro conmemorative coins are quite common. You would not receive one of those when you get cash in a shop, but I bought the five mintmarks for a few euros. It's the same price for all of them in the 12 Euro countries, apart from a few of them (Finland, San Marino, Vatican...). Regards.
So if my research is right their are ten coins total for this year? 5 different mints & then each mint has right side up & upside down edge inscriptions.
No, just five. Differentiating between those two edge inscription "varieties" seems to be common only in countries where such edge inscriptions are not common. By the way, these are the designs for the next years ... Christian Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (2007) Hamburg (2008) Saarland (2009)
You can of course collect all ten every year It's just that, since the edge inscriptions are added "randomly", the two types are not listed separately in catalogs. Some other euro countries just put the face value on the edge, and can thus avoid having two different types: But there is no difference in terms of value between the two (German, Finnish, etc.) edge varieties. The pictures of the new issues are just draft images, by the way. I am fairly sure that, for the common side, the newer design (which shows Europe and not just the pre-2004 European Union) will be used. Maybe not next year yet, but certainly after that ... Christian
I'm not even sure if I'll get all five. Right now I'm thinking I'll just pick up one each year. World coins aren't a big thing for me, but my interest in Germany (both because of my ancestors & because of it's history) makes me interested enough to at least get one each year. Guess it depend on how cheap I find a set of 5.
