    German States (Frankfurt): 1495 goldgulden of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor

    NGC AU58. Cert. #6680046-001. Friedberg-941, Levinson-325a. Weight: 3.25 g.

    Obverse: Saint John the Baptist. Reverse: globus cruciger.

    This early, it was not yet regular practice to put dates on European coins, so this piece is interesting for the fact that it is dated to the year 1495, with that date appearing at about 10:00-11:00 on the obverse, in late-medieval style numerals. Note how the "4" is a little curlicue resembling a cancer awareness ribbon.
